PARENT INVOLVEMENT
Your Role
We believe the family plays the most important role in the lives of our athletes, and that family commitments are significant. If an athlete must miss a team activity due to family obligations, we ask that a coach be notified as early as possible so the team can plan accordingly.
The primary role of parents/guardians in our program is to provide encouragement and support. Athletes benefit most when they know their families enjoy watching them compete and appreciate the effort they put into their development. Our goal is to help each athlete enjoy their experience and growth within the Elite West program.
Parents/guardians also play an important role in helping athletes prepare for training and competition. Athletes should arrive at practices and matches on time, properly equipped and ready to perform. This includes bringing the necessary equipment, water and ensuring they are well rested and prepared.
A key part of our philosophy is encouraging athletes to take responsibility for their own development. Athletes are expected to communicate directly with coaches regarding their roles, goals and progress. This helps build independence, accountability and confidence as they mature within the program.

Club
Fundraising
Elite West receives a casino fundraising event through the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) approximately every two years.
A significant portion of the club’s operating funds is generated through this volunteer-driven event. To provide context, the annual cost of operating the program is approximately $7,500 per athlete, while athlete fees are typically between $3,000 and $3,500.
Because of this gap, the club relies heavily on parent volunteers to support casino fundraising events. These events play an important role in helping keep athlete fees at a manageable level.
Information about upcoming casino dates and volunteer roles will be shared with families once scheduling details are confirmed.
Scorekeeping
Parent volunteers assist with scorekeeping during tournaments. Scorekeeping is an important role that helps ensure matches run smoothly and according to Volleyball Alberta standards.
Tips for scorekeeping:
-
If you are new to scorekeeping, sit with an experienced parent volunteer who can guide you through the process during your first match.
-
Review the Volleyball Alberta scoresheet tutorial before the tournament.
-
Stay calm and focused. The process becomes easier once the match begins and the rhythm of the game develops.
-
Watch the referee’s signal first to determine which team has won the rally, then record the point on the scoresheet.
-
Bring an erasable pen, such as a Pilot FriXion erasable gel pen, to make corrections easily.
