TRAINING PHILOSOPHY
Coaching
Our coaching approach is grounded in our personal values and priorities. These values shape the environment we create and guide how we support athletes throughout their development.

Elite West plays an important role in preparing athletes for the transition to post-secondary volleyball. Our priority is the long-term development of each athlete as they progress to the next stage of their athletic and personal journey.

Our focus is not on short-term recognition, awards or status. Instead, we are committed to building a training environment where athletes can develop the habits, mindset and discipline required to succeed at the highest levels of the sport.
We strive to develop each athlete individually while helping them contribute meaningfully to the success of the team. Achieving excellence in any field is not simply about talent. It requires the right mindset, consistent practice habits and a commitment to continuous growth.

Our goal as coaches is to have a positive and lasting impact on our athletes. We build long-term development plans for both the team and each individual athlete, supporting personal growth, competitive performance and preparation for the next stage of volleyball.
CORE OBJECTIVES
Culture
Elite West takes great pride in a team culture built on accountability, competition, respect, discipline, trust and sacrifice. We believe athletes develop best in an environment where the team comes first and where shared standards guide how we train, compete and support one another.
We emphasize accountability in every aspect of training and competition. Mistakes are a natural and necessary part of development, and athletes are encouraged to learn from them. Coaches work closely with players to correct errors and continue their growth as competitors and teammates.
Playing time is earned through preparation, effort and performance. Competition is a central part of our training environment. Athletes compete in practice every day and depth chart positions may change as players improve and demonstrate readiness for greater responsibility.
We believe that a strong team is built through personal sacrifice and a commitment to supporting teammates. When athletes focus on contributing to the success of the group, trust develops naturally and the team becomes stronger together.
Our coaches strive to build trust and respect with every athlete by establishing clear development plans and supporting each player’s long-term goals. In return, athletes are expected to demonstrate respect for their teammates and commit to the shared standards that define our program.
Through this culture, Elite West seeks to develop not only skilled volleyball players but also disciplined, accountable and respectful young people.
Playing time
Elite West strives to provide every athlete with the opportunity to develop and compete at a high level. While we work to give athletes opportunities to contribute, playing time is earned through preparation, performance and commitment to the team.
Development occurs primarily in practice. Athletes earn their opportunities in competition through the effort, focus and improvement they demonstrate in training. Consistent attendance and commitment to practice are essential, as missed sessions create opportunities for other athletes to advance.
Our program emphasizes accountability, discipline, commitment and sacrifice for the team. Athletes are expected to place the success of the group ahead of individual preferences, both in practice and in competition.
During tournament round-robin matches, coaches aim to involve the entire roster when possible. In playoff matches, lineups are determined by the players who give the team the best opportunity to compete successfully.
Throughout the season, athletes may be asked to play different roles or positions as team needs evolve. Adaptability and a team-first mindset are important elements of development within the program.
Coaches regularly review team performance with athletes following matches and throughout the season. Questions for the coaching staff should follow the 24-hour rule, allowing time for reflection before discussions take place.

International
Travel
A key part of the Elite West program is exposing athletes to unique competitive volleyball experiences. When possible, teams may participate in international training and competition opportunities during their development cycle.

In past seasons, Elite West teams have travelled to Cuba for training and competition. These trips provide athletes with the opportunity to experience a different training environment and compete against international players, in addition to learning from the Havana Provincial Sport School and the Cuban National Team coaches.
International travel allows athletes to broaden their perspective, experience different volleyball systems and connect with athletes from other cultures while continuing their development as players and teammates.
Post-secondary
Pathway
Preparing athletes for post-secondary volleyball is a central focus of the Elite West program. We take great pride in helping our athletes continue their volleyball careers while pursuing their education.
Elite West has a long history of athletes advancing to post-secondary programs across Canada. Since 2008, every graduating athlete from the program who has pursued post-secondary volleyball has received an opportunity to continue playing at the next level.
Our coaching staff actively supports athletes through the recruitment process by helping them understand program options, preparing recruitment materials and connecting with post-secondary coaches across the country. Our goal is to help each athlete find a program that aligns with their academic interests, athletic goals and long-term development.
Through preparation, mentorship and strong relationships within the volleyball community, Elite West works to ensure that athletes who aspire to play at the post-secondary level have the guidance and support needed to pursue that opportunity.
